Title: Health Hazards in Construction
Type: Lesson
Most people think of construction hazards as accidents — falls, cuts, and equipment strikes. But long-term health hazards can be just as dangerous and often go unnoticed until it’s too late.
Hazard | Description |
---|---|
Silica Dust | Found in concrete, brick, stone — causes lung disease and cancer |
Asbestos | Used in older buildings — can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer |
Lead | Found in old paint and pipes — toxic if inhaled or ingested |
Noise | Prolonged exposure leads to permanent hearing loss |
Fumes & Vapors | From welding, fuels, solvents — can affect lungs, liver, brain |
Extreme Heat or Cold | Can cause heatstroke, dehydration, hypothermia |
OSHA requires employers to:
Label all hazardous materials clearly
Provide SDS for each hazardous substance
Train workers on chemical hazards and safe handling procedures
You have the Right to Know what you’re working with — ask if you’re unsure.
Long-term health risks are easy to overlook — but they can cost your life. Protect your lungs, ears, skin, and body by using the right PPE, asking questions, and knowing what hazards are present.
