Title: OSHA Focus Four – Electrocution Hazards
Type: Lesson
Electrocution is the fourth Focus Four hazard — and it’s one of the most sudden and severe risks on any construction site.
Electric shock can cause:
Cardiac arrest
Severe internal and external burns
Muscle and nerve damage
Fatal falls (if shocked while elevated)
Even low-voltage systems can kill — electricity doesn’t have to be “high voltage” to be deadly.
Contact with overhead or buried power lines
Improper use of extension cords
Damaged power tools or cords
Lack of Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)
Working on energized equipment without lockout/tagout
Standing water near electrical tools
Never assume a wire is de-energized — always test before you touch.
All electrical work must follow OSHA and NFPA 70E standards
Temporary wiring must be protected and GFCI-protected
Tools must be grounded or double insulated
Lockout/tagout procedures must be used when servicing equipment
Electricity can’t be seen, smelled, or heard — but it can kill instantly. Protect yourself by following all electrical safety rules, even for “quick” tasks.
